A Realistic 5-Hours-a-Week Plan for Building Online

You don’t need to give up evenings and weekends to build something online. Here’s a realistic weekly plan of about five hours, designed to fit around work, family and everything else.

The weekly plan

Day Time Task
Monday 45 minutes Plan the week: pick one question your audience asks and outline your answer
Tuesday 60 minutes Create one main piece: a blog post, a longer video or a detailed post
Wednesday 30 minutes Repurpose it: two or three short posts or a 60-second clip
Thursday 45 minutes Engage: reply to comments and help people in groups you belong to
Friday 30 minutes Send one helpful email to your list
Weekend 60 minutes Learn one new skill and review what worked this week

That’s four and a half hours, with a 30-minute buffer for the week when life gets in the way.

Five rules that make it work

  1. Same slots every week. Put them in your calendar like appointments.
  2. One platform at a time. Master one before adding another.
  3. Batch similar tasks. Writing on Tuesday, editing on Wednesday — switching tasks is what eats time.
  4. Protect family time. If a slot clashes with something important, move it; don’t stack it.
  5. Stop when the time’s up. Done and consistent beats perfect and exhausted.

What to expect, honestly

  • Weeks 1–4: everything takes longer than planned. That’s learning, not failure.
  • Months 2–3: tasks get quicker, and you start to see which topics your audience responds to.
  • After that: your library of helpful content keeps working for you, and consistency starts to compound.

Results — including whether and when any income follows — depend on your topic, your audience, your effort and many outside factors. Anyone who promises a specific outcome on a fixed timescale is guessing or selling.

From my experience

How do you fit your own content around a demanding full-time job? Share your real routine, the time slots you use and one thing you gave up or changed. 80–150 words.

Try this today (10 minutes)

Open your calendar and block the six slots from the table above for next week. Give each one a name, such as “Create — Tuesday”.

Common beginner mistake

Starting with two hours a day, then stopping completely after a fortnight. Begin smaller than you think you need to. You can always add time later.
